The fifth series of Call the Midwife is set in 1961 and is a BBC period drama. It follows the lives of a group of nurse midwives who work in the Poplar community in East End London. Based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, the series deals with sensitive social issues suffered by women.
Jenny Lee is a newly qualified midwife. She joins the group of midwives and the nuns of Nonnatus House, a nursing convent within the Poplar community. Their primary work is to help bring safe childbirth to women in the area and to look after their countless newborns.
The series has received critical acclaim and was ranked the most viewed television drama series for the BBC since 2001 pulling in approximately 10.5 million viewers per episode.
