The election results are announced, with Unwin tied for the second seat – but the announcement provokes public fury and he is attacked by an angry mob. Demelza tries to influence the outcome of Ross’s trial by appealing directly to Justice Lister, but is stopped by an eavesdropping George. Dwight tries to persuade Francis not to kill himself, and Jud gives a surprising testimony. Clymer gives Ross a speech to make at the conclusion of his trial – but he rejects it, choosing to stick to his principles.
