The BBC marks veteran natural historian David Attenborough’s 90th birthday by revisiting four `passion project’ films from the vast back catalogue of documentaries he has created throughout his career.
The first programme revisited is A Blank on the Map, which first broadcast in 1971, and detailed David’s expedition into the heart of unknown territory in New Guinea in search of a previously uncontacted tribe known as the Biami. Spending several weeks mapping the forest, David and the team encounter tree kangaroos, goura pigeons and an emerald green tree python, before finally coming into contact with a group of tribal people never before seen by Europeans.
The second of David Attenborough’s `passion project’ films in The Lost Gods of Easter Island, which originally aired in 2000. The programme traces the origins of a carved figure David bought in New York in the 1980s. Seeking to determine the item’s origins, he treks from Russia to Australia, from England to the Pacific, and finally ends up on Easter Island – home of the famous Moai heads – and discovers that he may have purchased what was originally a gift to Captain Cook from the islanders.
